Frequently Asked Questions and Information
Glucosamine works differently than NSAIDs, mainly because it is natural. Glucosamine builds and maintains cartilage, tendons and other connective tissues in the body by acting as a building block for these tissues. It also helps to inhibit enzymes that destroy cartilage family tissues. Glucosamine helps build quality cartilage tissues in the growing pup and it also helps prevent the cartilage destruction and resultant joint pain, inflamation and loss of flexibility in a natural way in adult dogs. At the correct dosage, Glucosamine has been shown (for decades) to be effective at easing the pain of arthritis and joint pain as well as building and re-building cartilage -- which is something that traditional NSAIDs are unable to do. There are numerous studies that confirm that the use of NSAIDs can actually work against arthritic conditions and can cause the pain from arthritis to become even worse in the long run by breaking down the cartilage tissues in joints. There are scores of placebo controlled double blind studies which report these same facts over and over.
Many of the oroginal studies of Glucosamine were performed on the Glucosamine HCL form, but most recent studies confirm that the Glucosamine Sulfate (2KCL) form is the most biologically active. In any case, be sure that the ingredients are of "Human Grade" (Pharmaceutical Grade) NATURAL ingredients.
Chondroitin Sulfate is a larger molecule than Glucosamine. It has not been as extensively studied as Glucosamine. Most studies show that Chondroitin Sulfate (from Bovine Tracheal Cartilage) will promote a better quality of cartilage when used in a growing pup, and will spur cartilage growth. Chondroitin promotes the retention of water in cartilage tissues as well as inhibiting enzymes that break down cartilage tissues. Chondroitin builds and supports the "ground substance" of cartilage. Chondroitin also reduces inflamation. Chondroitin has not been shown to be beneficial for adult dogs.
MSM, Proanthocyanidins and Bromelain and Hyaluronic Acid
MSM : (methylsulfonylmethane) is designated as a "Sulfur Donator". Because of it's actions as a Sulfur donator, it is the most important provider of fluids which act as "shock absorbers" in joints. In clinical research at the University of Oregon, it was found that MSM reduces inflamation, increases circulation, reduces muscle spasm and reduces scar tissue. This is in addition to it's primary funcion as producing high water containing compounds that act as shock absorbers. Sulfur is the 8th most common element in a dog's body.
Proanthocyanidins: (Pycnogenol) is a powerful anti-oxidant. These are members of the "Flavonoid" family of nutrients. In double blind studies, they have been shown to reduce the edema associated with micro or macro traumas. They have also been shown to strenghthen capillairies. The main functions of proanthocyanidins are the stabilization of collagen and the maintenance of elastin which are two critical proteins in connective tissues, blood vessels and muscle. They also inhibit enzymes that break down collegen tissues. The break down of collagen is what makes cartilage in and around joints to lose it's elasticity (causes stiffness) and later leads to arthritis.
Bromelain: Bromelain has been used as a therapeutic compound since 1957. It's actions include: 1. Inhibition of platelet aggregation; 2. Fibrinolytic activity; 3. Anti-inflamatory action; 4. Enhanced wound healing (internal or external); 5. Circulatory improvement. Bromelain is a proteolytic (protein digesting) enzyme. Much of the physiological activity of Bromelain is not accounted for by it's proteolytic fraction and it is likely that the beneficial effects of Bromelain are due to multiple factors, and not to one single factor that can be isolated. Bromelain is absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, with 40% of the high molecular weight substances detected in the blood after oral administration. Bromelain was the most potent of nine anti-inflamatory substances when tested on experimentally induced edema. Bromelain use results in a significant reduction in pain and edema as well as enhanced circulation to injured tissues. Indications for the use of (oral )Bromelain: It inhibits blood platelet aggregation; 2, It continues to provide a therapeutic effect for as long as it is administered, with no evidence indicating that tolerance develops; 3. It is considered non-toxic, even for prolonged periods of time; 4. It is easily metabolized an does not "build up"; 5. It has a greater therapeutic effect when administered orally (even better than when administered I.V.); 6. It is most effective when adminstered PRIOR to a potentially traumatic event.
Flex HA : Hyaluronic Acid (H.A.): HA is most beneficial for dogs who get stiff in the hips, knees or shoulders or have confirmed arthritis. HA restores the cushioning tissues in joints. HA is found in the synovial fluid in joints. Synovial fluid is secreted by the synovial membrane in joints. Synovial fluid is the only way in which nutrients can be delivered into cartilage and waste can be removed. Hyaline cartilage is the most predominant cartilage in joints. HA is the "ground substance" of cartilage. The most common form of HA that is currently used medically is by injecting a product called "Syn Visc" into human knees. Syn Visc is produced by extracting HA from Chicken Combs. For a number of years, scientists tried to develop an oral HA supplement, but they were unable to do so, because of the fact that animal derived HA molecules were too large (molecular weight of 1.2 to 1.5 million Daltons) to be absorbed, and were just digested. But, the scientists at the laboratory that I use have been able to perfect a proprietary enzyme-cleaving technique that lowers the molecular weight of the HA (from vegetable sources) without altering it's chemical nature. The final molecular weight of the HA that we offer is 5000 Daltons. This allows the HA to be taken orally as a nutritional supplement. It is absorbed without being digested, and thus goes straight to the joints.
Hyaluronic Acid is essential for the health of the synovial fluid which supports joints. HA is essential for the structure of the extracellular matrix and insures that the matrix has the ability to hold onto it's essential fluid. The extracellualr matrix keeps cartilage tissues supple. HA supplementation is critical in instances of decreased synthesis or "re-compartmentalization" of HA that occurs with aging and arthritis. Our proprietary process produces an HA of low molecular weight that is absorbable intact through the intestinal tract.
IMPORTANT : H.A. works best when given in combination with Glucosamine + MSM. There is a SPECIAL
Boswellia Serrata is a natural safe and effective anti-inflamatory/pain reliever. It is intended for "Everyday Aches and Pains", and is not inteded to replace any daily prescription anti-inflamatory medication that you receive from your Veterinarian. It works by inhibiting Leukotrienes instead of inhibiting Cox-2. This fact is what makes it extremely safe, with no adverse reactions, no contraindications and it has not been shown to interact with other medications.
IMPORTANT: All of our products are tested by Three Independant Laboratories. One Lab (a Microbiology Lab) tests all raw materials and products for yeast, mold and bactrial purity. The Physical Analysis Lab tests for the preciseness of the dosage, weight, hardness, disintegration and overall consistency. The Chemical Analysis Lab tests the potency of formula components.
